The Natural Pink Dolphin

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

It might be odd to think about, an original  true pink dolphin. Most of us can picture in our minds a regular lovable and cute dolphin in its shiny, somewhat beige reflective coat, that glimmers beautifully in the sunlight as the water rolls of its skin. But  if i was to tell you there is a place on Earth that do shelter pink dolphins, you might believe me to be crazy. How can there be a Pink Dolphin? I mean really, is this some young girls fantasy, as she pictures a beautiful pink dolphin in her head and attempts to draw one on paper?

No my friends this is the real deal and we have the pictures and  the video playback to back it up. However the story of the pink dolphins, is one of diminishing returns, especially in regards to their future habitat and in fact their future existence.

images

According to a story done by CNN, the beauty of this dolphin swimming around the seas of Honk Kong, The Indo Pacific Hump back Dolphins, according to scientists,  turn pink due to what they call internal heating, somehow in an effort to adapt to their environment and the cold waters, they actually develop a pinkish hue in their skin pigmentation that we interpret as pink.

Dispite this adaptation to their surroundings, the true point of the
CNN video story is the ever decreasing habitat of the Pink Dolphins. Each year as Honk Kong expands its commercial prowess, it also expands and detracts from the increasingly limited waters of the Pink Dolphins. This is due to new Harbors, bridges, boating and other commercial activities that require more of the Pink Dolphin natural habitat.

Another major challenge to the continued longevity of the  over 2500 dolphins in the area  is the pollution. Honk Kong dumps approximately 400 000 cubic meters of  pollution each day. The equivalent, as the video says, to 4000 truck loads of  sewage. A major health concern not only to the dolphins but the entire ecosystem of the area.

If we are to maintain the existence of these beloved and amazing creatures, we must take adequate steps to ensure the safety of the environment and most importantly to secure the safety of the animals that dwell within. < Watch this Video>

Baby Dolphin in Baltimore MD

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Hey there,
Many of you have heard about the new baby dolphin that was born at the Baltimore Aquarium.  This new baby Dolphin is swimming around with its mother and nursing regularly.  As you can imagine, the staff of the aquarium is really busy watching this baby and hoping and praying that it survives.

Here is a video and article from the Baltimore Sun that is really interesting and you should see and read….

With little ones to consider — to say nothing of their sensitive mothers — the usually boisterous dolphin show, known for splashing and shrieking, has turned into a quiet zone, with hushed music, fewer visitors allowed in at a time and a video documenting dolphin births substituting for most of the noisy acrobatics.

Though showing off baby animals is a no-brainer at most zoos, a surefire visitor magnet, the aquarium is keeping its dolphin calves out of the public eye — but showing them off all the same. With the survival rate of dolphin calves less than one in three and many babies not making it to their first birthday, the aquarium is hoping the short-term shushing, and limiting access to the cuteness to just a glimpse for now, will lead to healthier dolphins. Georgia Aquarium Opens New Exhibit

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Hi All,

The Georgia Aquarium has added a new Exhibit,  a huge Broadway type production with dolphins. Here is an excerpt from the online story I read…

The 25-minute show includes professional actors in elaborate costumes, colorful animation on a giant screen at the back of the performance tank and original music by composer Tim Williams recorded by a 61-piece orchestra at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Each show is unique, though, because dolphin trainers vary which tricks the playful gray mammals perform to keep them engaged in the show and to keep visitors guessing what’s next.

Blindfolded Dolphins can see

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Hey guys I came across this really great online article that talks about dolphins being able to see even when blindfolded.  According to Jaakkola, a leading scientist in marine biology, it is not unexpected that dolphins would be able to see while blindfolded. This is because dolphins use a special technique called echolocation, or more commonly known as sonar, which basically uses sound waves to locate objects, animals and people.

However what they found interesting in this case, the male dolphin named Tanner was being studied and could actually imitate and copy a fellow dolphins actions while being blindfolded. This is quite impressive due to the fact that many of the other dolphins swimming movements are extremely subtle. However the dolphins that initialize the movements are making much louder noises themselves, which leads us to believe that sound has some intricate tie into Tanner being able to imitate perfectly almost every move given to the initial dolphins.

You simply have to read up on this incredible story, and see what possibilities this study could reveal for even human intelligence and understanding of the higher cellular brain function. < Read this Article >

I would love to hear what you guys think about the article? Do you think there are still things we have not learned about the dolphins? What can dolphins teach us that we may not already know?

Dolphin Teeth

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Hey Guys, I came across this really short, but cool video about dolphin teeth. It got me thinking about how dolphins use their teeth. Are they like shark that rip their prey to shreds, or like whales that simply vacuum suck in small fish and other organisms.

Interestingly, scientists have found that dolphins primarily use their teeth to catch fish but not in the conventional sense we are used to. While humans and other mammals use their teeth to bite and chew their food into smaller pieces, allowing easier digestion. Dolphins swallow their food whole, and only use their teeth to grip the fish firmly and then swallow it. There is never any biting or chewing; as a result their digestive juices are significantly potent in breaking down food entering the dolphin, allowing for easier digestion and supplementation to the dolphin.

Oh and if you were curious, this was the video, Swimming with Dolphins Nassau, that got me thinking, its actually very cute, take a look.

Another interesting fact about dolphins, is that they have 44 conical shaped teeth, that are widely spread out and are essentially kept in near perfect condition for the majority of the Dolphins life. Most scientists agree it is very uncommon to see any dolphin suffer from common human oral conditions, like gingivitis, tar tar build up, conventional cavities, etc. This is primarily due to the fact that Dolphins never chew anything, so nothing ever gets stuck in the teeth. Residue never piles up, and therefore does not cause such conditions. This coupled with the fact that they are well spaced, give the dolphin ample dental protection and insurance for a good healthy oral record.

So now you know, the next time you go swimming with the dolphins, you don’t have to worry about them ever chewing you up, only swallowing you whole. :)

Hope you guys enjoyed the post. I’m curious to know, what did you guys think before you read this article, did you know all this already? What did you find interesting?

Until Next time,

God Bless,

Tarek
