New Baby Sea Lion Dominican Republic

Friday, October 15th, 2010

It is always so cool when a new marine mammal is born and in Ocean World Adventure Park in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic sent us a press release to to announced the birth of a baby sea lion of the South American breed.

baby sea lion and mother

It was told to me that the first moment that the team of experts at the park were aware  of the  state of gestation of the sea lion, the pup’s mother; all necessary care was taken to ensure the well being of both mother  and the baby. The new baby sea lion was born July 24, 2010 during the day, after a labor of about an hour. The pup is a male who, at birth, weighed 25 pounds. The delivery occurred in breech position (fins first), contrary to the usual head first. Parents are named Chacha, the mother, and Jefe , both 9 years old and originally from Uruguay.   Chacha nursed him right away after the birth and baby pup grew strong.  He swam for the first time at 11 days old and is already a confident swimmer.  Like all babies, is very playful and loves to play with pieces of ice, hoses and other toys made by the trainers and staff that is taking care of him.

The training of the new baby will start from the time when he can eat solid food (fish).  Among the initial behaviors he will learn will be relaxation techniques to allow the veterinarians to perform routine checks, which ensure a long and healthy life.

The staff at Ocean World is very happy to share this important news to you, since the birth of this new baby sea lion symbolizes the commitment to preserving the environment, diversity of life, care and respect for all animal species at this well kept facility. This is the second event of its kind to be recorded at Ocean World, as in 2006 a bottlenose dolphin “Lili” was born under human care in our facilities.

The staff at Ocean World has successfully nurtured the second birth of an exotic animal in this facility. As evidence that these species under human care can live long, healthy and safe lives.

Since last summer the park has been developing an educational campaign aimed at children to create awareness about important issues such as the care and protection of animals and the preservation of our planet’s natural resources.

Would you love to see this new baby pup? You can if you do the Swimming with the dolphins and sea lion combo in Puerto Plata. Just contact us about that program. I don’t think they have a name for the pup yet. What name would you want to call him?
God Bless,
John

Punta Cana Dolphin and Snorkeling

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Hi All,

Punta Cana is so beautiful, the water, beaches and people. This place is growing by leaps and bounds. It is wild to see how fast Punta Cana as a vacation destination has taken off. I guess because of the modern airport that is close by all the resorts and the reasonably priced all inclusive resorts help. But of coarse the activities are amazing here too, from the natural dolphin swim in Punta Cana, to snorkeling the reefs, horseback riding on the beach, fun boat rides in the ocean, and watersports galore. The word has spread and this has become a HOT destination.

We wrote a story about the Natural Dolphin Swim and the Snorkeling Experience in Punta Cana. If you like to read it, please  Click Here – Punta Cana Dolphin Swimming and Snorkeling.

Snorkeling or Free-Diving, which many call it, is a great water sport to get used to. It seems easy and it is once you get used to the mask and snorkel in your mouth. Once you get past that hurdle of not swallowing water all the time, you need to try holding your breath and free dive down under the water. The world record is about 300 feet under the water, pretty amazing. You will appreciate this record once you try free diving under the water only a few feet, not that easy. I have seen people free dive up to 60 feet. I still still struggle to 20 :) .

Here in Punta Cana you can snorkel in the Ocean and you can snorkel with the dolphins with the Natural Swim. So the better you are are with the equipment, the better time you will have. If you can, buy a mask and snorkel at your local dive shop and you can practice at your local pool, lake or ocean. You will be ready for this vacation!!

Do we have any snorkel stories out there? From beginners? From Novice? From the Experts? I would love to hear all your experiences.
God Bless,
John

Dolphin Swimming in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Hi All,

We are selling lots of Dolphin Programs in Punta Cana, which seems to be one of the more popular destinations we are selling right now.  Punta Cana is beautiful but the other destination we sell in Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is really beautiful in its own right too.

Puerto Plata is on the North Coast, where there are mountains surrounding a beautiful coast line.  So you can spend time on the beach and then white water rafting in the mountains the next day.  This is very unique for a Caribbean Island, most are very flat and don’t have white water rapids in the mountains.

Also, which is really cool about Puerto Plata is the amazing all-inclusive resorts they have there.  Most American aren’t used to this, but the word is starting to get out there what a DEAL this is, to have your room, meals and beverages included into one price.  A real hassle free vacation.  Some of the all-inclusive resorts I like are the Sun Village and Gran Ventana.

We have been selling swimming with the dolphins in Puerto Plata for many years and there is something there for everyone. Of coarse there are dolphins to swim with and to entertain you with a show, there are sea lion encounters, shark encounters, sting ray encounters and even scuba diving with the dolphins.  In fact, the Puerto Plata facility is one of the few places to enjoy scuba diving with the dolphins.

Here is a video we did of the facility and my day there in Puerto Plata.

Does anyone out there of feed back about Puerto Plata as a destination? Or feedback about the Dolphin Swim program there?
God Bless,
John
