Dolphin Saves Beached Whales

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Once again another amazing story of a dolphin saving a beach whale and her calf, a local conservationists in New Zealand were faced with an overwhelmingly difficult challenge of trying to save beached whales. Every year over 30 whales become stranded on the beach and inevitably die as a result of being unable to return to the open ocean.  These conservationists tried for almost 2 hours to try and calm the whales down so they could get close enough to actually help them but because of their restlessness which made a rescue near impossible.

Just when he and his group were about to give up all hope to save these wonderful animals, a single agile dolphin  named Maiko bolted in at full speed to the rescue of the whales. She directly went to the beached whales and begins to swim in circles in the shallow beached waters around the whales for about five minutes. The whales started to calmed down and allowed the animal volunteers to act decisively and rescue of the whales.

This amazing video below depicts a report and some footage of Maiko the dolphin who reportedly came back a few weeks later after the event had occurred. This time the dolphin came swimming to play with the children and have a good time.  You should take a look of this video because it’s truly spectacular.

Just amazing, dolphins continue to impress and amaze, it simply pays testament to dolphins astounding intelligence and defines without question why these creatures fascinate marine biologists and scientists to this day. Can these dolphins really speak with other marine life besides those of their own kind? If so that would be akin to a human speaking normally with a common house cat or domestic dog, we certainly do not have that capacity. Yet, the dolphin seems to be able to do it with whales. Just think, what we will know in the future and how it may aid in human civilization and societal advancement?

So what do you guys think about the video? Would you ever consider swimming with dolphins and see how special their behavior is?

Hope to hear from you soon

Dolphin Parenting Video

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Most of us would be truly shocked to find out just how human like dolphins are in their parenting with their new born calves. Of course most mammals tend to have a generally close connection with their new born during their first few vulnerable months and sometimes years. However the dolphins instruct and guide their calves for much of their childhood and keep a eye out for them to see they are out of harms way. They teach and instruct them all the essentials, how to gather food and the techniques in both swimming, evading potential predators and interacting with other dolphins in finding and catching more food.

This video highlights some of these key attributes and also gives us some very interesting details about the high infant mortality rate. Also, the dolphin calves greatest skills lies with their ability to copy and learn exactly what the mother does, so that they can be successful dolphins in their adulthood as well.

Wow absolutely astounding, these dolphins are without question excellent parents, probably better than some human ones. We could stand to learn a lot from these wonderful and amazing creatures. This video just reaffirms and verifies the unparalleled intelligence of these animals and how blessed we are to have them.

What do you guys think about this video? Did you know that dolphins were such good parents? How do you feel about what you saw? Would you ever consider doing a swim with dolphins activity?

Hope to hear from you soon,

Dolphins Defend Humans from Shark Attack

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

The sheer intelligence of dolphins continues to baffle and amaze scientists to this day. Some of the things they do are so intuitively clever that it’s difficult to believe that they are actually animals, and not humans in fish form.

There are countless stories of how dolphins recognize humans instinctively as friends, how using their echolocation, or more commonly known to us as sonar. They can identify every bone and ligament and can even see the unborn babies of pregnant women, understanding the importance of life within the womb before life has begun.  Even more spectacularly, they don’t just recognize the importance of humans in many cases they come to their aid and rescue from other aquatic predators, most commonly sharks.

Shark attacks have been proven to be rare and far between, but they do happen, and don’t be fooled its an extremely frightening and traumatic experience, and one that could possibly end lives.  This video, we found is simply astounding and will leave you saying, that’s amazing. It depicts just how dolphins recognize humans and a recreated scenario of how dolphins have continually defended humans from the most ferocious predators of the sea.

“Absolutely remarkable” To know that you have a friend in the ocean, one that is a friend to humans is comforting, especially when grasped with the greater realization of how many predators lurk in the deep waters of the ocean blue.

Dolphins will always amaze but more importantly they can teach us on many different levels, especially on a humanitarian level, caring for your brother and your fellow man.

Hope you guys enjoyed this blog, as always we would love to hear what you guys think, have you ever been in a situation where dolphins came to the rescue. Have you ever considered swimming with the dolphins? how do you now perceive dolphins before you read this blog?

Eager to hear from you all

Marine Careers and endless possibilities

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

This has indeed, as they say, been a long time coming , many of you have asked for more information on the possible careers involving Marine Wild Life and other sub related fields, like how to get involved, the best fields to enter, the most in demand and how to start. Well today we are going to be addressing these questions, but realize that what you read here is just a sample of what is out there, and that in fact this will just be a small summary and acquisition of the possible marine careers available and in demand now and in the near future.

Its interesting to note that the field of Marine Biology is extremely popular and coveted in today’s pool of possible career paths, many are enamored with the idea of interacting and studying live dolphins in the wild and learning their mysteries and secrets.   Unfortunately the truth of most marine biologists in the field to study marine mammals like dolphins, porpoises and Whales, is that these career paths are extremely competitive due to the immense volume of students vying for limited positions in the few organizations willing to hire them. This in tandem with the reality that most of these desired careers working with dolphins are actually done in a simple lab with tissue samples of dolphins, not real dolphins in the wild.

However this is no reason to be discouraged, there are literally countless possibilities of careers in the general field of Marine Biology and this is specifically attributed to the fact that anyone can literally study anything in the Biosphere, and become specialized in that field. Whether it be studying individual clams in the Arctic or perhaps studying all species of clams and their reaction to global climate shifts and pretty much everything in between. However some fields obviously are in more demand than others, a field covering how the excrement of turtles and sea life affect the ecosystem around them may not be as desirable as studying the puffer fish and developing potential anti-venom; it does not mean that the field does not exist for it. So now that you have a better understanding of the scope of how wide you can really go with Marine Biology, lets take some time and break down some of the major sister fields and related sub fields that all play a vital relationship to the overall success and cohesion of the Marine community.

Marine Careers

In Marine Biology specifically there are important sub fields to consider, here we will list the ones that are currently hot on the market and in demand, those include, Biotechnology or related biomedical field that mostly involve utilizing the natural drugs and venom’s of marine life to combat popular problems especially in the shipping industry.

Molecular Biology is another hot field, that utilizes as it insinuates microscopic lifeforms like protozoa and other single celled organisms  to create and devise new possible solution’s, to diseases, like improved antibodies and antibiotics and a stringer medical core.

Aqua Culture, environmental biology and toxicology are all related sub fields that have very similar ties with respect to observing the environment and determine problem solving factors to common problems like overpopulation, toxicity in the water and much more. All of these have practical applications in real life and all of these listed so far are in demand for the new wave of college graduates hunting for a potential marine related job.

Some other great fields to consider that are closely linked with Marine Biology include Oceanography, Ocean Engineering, Coastal Engineering, and much more. As said before this is just a taste of what is available and what is to come. For more information regarding potential Marine Careers and how to get involved. Here is a website you need to check out for more information <  CLICK HERE >.  This site will give you a solid understanding of what is currently being offered and its opportunities while explaining in great detail how each of these related fields interact and serve society.

I do hope you guys enjoyed this post,  there is truly an almost limitless amount of options for someone considering the fascinating and unique field of Marine Biology  and hopefully with more inspired and dedicated students and soon to be scientists working hard, we can be hopeful that the world will indeed be a better place.

So what did you guys think about this blog, was it helpful, did you feel you got a descent ide of the different fields and possibilities?  What potential careers might you consider if you were in the Marine field? Have you ever gone swimming with the dolphins and felt inspired to study them? As always eager to hear your responses, until next time

God Bless,

Super Healing Powers of Dolphins

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

It is interesting in today’s world with all the turmoil and confusion, to see any glimmers of hope on the horizon.  Something on the positive end that stops and makes you think wow, that is amazing, in a good way. Well, this is in fact one of those stories.

The overall mystery and mystique of the dolphins still fascinates scientists and zoologists to this day. You would be astounded to know how much we still don’t know about dolphins, and further impressed by the sheer amount we learn each and every day. Dr Michael Zasloff is a testament to that statement in many ways, as he published his finding on the resistance of dolphins to infections and overall severe trauma to their bodies.

images

Dr Zasloff asks “how is it possible that a dolphin swimming in the ocean can survive a ferocious shark bite and not succumb to its arduous effects, the blood lost, the blood trauma and overall infection and disease from the bite.”  Instead research currently shows that dolphins have an unusually high tolerance to pain and also heal wounds at impossibly level of efficiency. What causes this? How is this done?  Can humans learn from this and possibly apply this knowledge to our modern reservoir of science and technology.

In the end, this is ground breaking research can open the windows to limitless possibilities with respect to utilizing and harnessing the magnificent abilities of these wondrous creatures. Most of all we can safely say we know a little more about these cute cuddly and loveable creatures than we did before.  Who knows what mysteries lie ahead. But one thing is for sure, they will be full of excitement and adventure.

So what do you guys think, do you think there is more to learn about dolphins? Do you believe that we can use what we learn from dolphins to better our society and overall civilization?  I know I do, cant wait to hear from you all.

Taz the Stranded Dolphin Finds a Home

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Hey All,
Here is some news of Taz the dolphin that stranded itself on the shores of Ding Darling State Park Florida. Here is an update from Mote Marine Laboratory who rescued Taz.

— The young bottlenose dolphin brought to Mote after stranding on a sandbar off Sanibel Island has moved on to a new permanent home. “Taz,” a male dolphin estimated to be about 6 months old at stranding, was brought to Mote’s Dolphin and Whale Hospital after being found on Jan. 13 on a sandbar in the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island.

Taz the Dolphin getting Rescue

Why Taz stranded remains uncertain, but rescuers found him separated from his mother, who was not in sight. Bottlenose dolphin calves typically stay with their mothers until they are 3-6 years old, depending on them for food, protection and to help them learn how to feed independently and safely navigate the environment.

Without a parent to guide him, the federal authorities who oversee the protection of wild marine mammals — the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) — determined that Taz would not survive on his own and should not be returned to the wild. NMFS chose the Indianapolis Zoo to be Taz’s new home for several reasons, including the fact that it affords the opportunity for him to live with a suitable social group, including adult females we hope will “adopt” him, as well the highly experienced husbandry and veterinary team there.—-

If you would like to see more about this beautiful young dolphin, please go to this web page < Click Here > to read more on Taz and if you want to help with Mote Marine Laboratory.

Well it seems if you want to see this young dolphin swimming around, you need to go to Indianapolis. Let’s hope Taz does well in its new surroundings.

Have your heard about Taz? What do you think about Taz going to Indiana?

Baby Dolphin is Born Video

Monday, February 14th, 2011

There is nothing more magical that a new born baby dolphin. People from all around come in droves to see this amazing sight. At the facility in Miami, a new baby dolphin was born recently, the mother Samantha is approximately 15 years old and was pregnant for 12 months, and recently had a beautiful baby calf.

Now some interesting facts about dolphin calves. Firstly it would surprise you to know that the average calf weighs anywhere between 25-40 lbs, they temporarily have much darker skin color that their adult counterparts, and the calf will nurse with its mother 1 minute every hour for most of the day and night for a period of 18 months. However 4 months into the feeding the calf gains the ability to eat fish, alleviating some of the stress of feeding on Samantha. The video below gets into some detail about this.

You simply have to watch this heart warming video, of Samantha and her new baby calf.

Above all like the video stressed, Samantha health is most important for the vitality and continued health of the baby calf. The vitamin packed fish seems to do the trick quite well and allows the baby the extra energy needed to get through those first critical 4 months before the baby calf becomes somewhat self sufficient.

An important point not mentioned in the video is that most dolphins in the wild that bear calves, are burdened with extreme levels of fatigue and exhaustion trying to supplement their corresponding calves. Dolphins have a much better chance of surviving and flourishing in dolphin facilities than they do in the wild, due to careful human observation and care.

As always we would love to hear what you think of this video, have you ever seen a baby dolphin calf? Did you know all the facts about baby dolphin calves mentioned above, would you consider doing a dolphin swim in the future?

Until next time, this is Tarek wishing you all the best and may God Bless you all.

Dolphin Teeth

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Hey Guys, I came across this really short, but cool video about dolphin teeth. It got me thinking about how dolphins use their teeth. Are they like shark that rip their prey to shreds, or like whales that simply vacuum suck in small fish and other organisms.

Interestingly, scientists have found that dolphins primarily use their teeth to catch fish but not in the conventional sense we are used to. While humans and other mammals use their teeth to bite and chew their food into smaller pieces, allowing easier digestion. Dolphins swallow their food whole, and only use their teeth to grip the fish firmly and then swallow it. There is never any biting or chewing; as a result their digestive juices are significantly potent in breaking down food entering the dolphin, allowing for easier digestion and supplementation to the dolphin.

Oh and if you were curious, this was the video, Swimming with Dolphins Nassau, that got me thinking, its actually very cute, take a look.

Another interesting fact about dolphins, is that they have 44 conical shaped teeth, that are widely spread out and are essentially kept in near perfect condition for the majority of the Dolphins life. Most scientists agree it is very uncommon to see any dolphin suffer from common human oral conditions, like gingivitis, tar tar build up, conventional cavities, etc. This is primarily due to the fact that Dolphins never chew anything, so nothing ever gets stuck in the teeth. Residue never piles up, and therefore does not cause such conditions. This coupled with the fact that they are well spaced, give the dolphin ample dental protection and insurance for a good healthy oral record.

So now you know, the next time you go swimming with the dolphins, you don’t have to worry about them ever chewing you up, only swallowing you whole. :)

Hope you guys enjoyed the post. I’m curious to know, what did you guys think before you read this article, did you know all this already? What did you find interesting?

Until Next time,

God Bless,

Tarek

Humans Using Echolocation Like Dolphin

Friday, April 30th, 2010

You have to see this video from a boy who uses echolocation like a dolphin. It is amazing how he walks, runs, bikes, roller blades, and plays video games being totally blind.

He uses echolocation just like a dolphin would use it under the sea. He makes clicking sounds and the sounds bounce back to him. Once the sounds bounces back to him, he knows pretty much what is in front and around him. Just like when a dolphin swimming under the ocean and with their echolocation they don’t run into any objects, coral reefs, boats, and objects. It is special how the dolphins navigate in the water especially when the ocean can be murky and dark.

You need to watch the video to believe it.

Do you think we can learn more things from dolphins or other animals which can help our lives like this young boy with echolocation?
Pretty Amazing!
God Bless,
John
