Should Dolphin Be Released into Wild?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Kitana, a 2 year old female dolphin, is being rehabilited at Gulf World marine park. They found Kitana off the shore and she was very sickly. Now she is living the good life for now at the park, eating and playing. She is getting healthy quickly.  The reason I say for now, because the last dolphin at Gulf World that was nursed to health and set free got ate by Sharks almost immediately after the release.

The protocol by the Marine Fishery Act requires animals to be set free after they are healthy enough.

You need to see this news clip and give me your opinion < See Video >…

Interesting isn’t it.  Should Kitana be released?

Beggar the Dolphin Sarasota Florida

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Who would think a Dolphin called Beggar the Dolphin would be so famous but this dolphin is. He lives off the coast of Sarasota and he made the news because of his begging for food. This dolphin swims up to boats in the bay and opens his mouth next to the fishing boats and begs for food.

It seems like a lot of boaters are feeding him. If you do a search on Youtube, and type Beggar the Dolphin or Begger the Dolphin, you will find a lot of homemade videos of people feeding this dolphin.

To see a news report on this dolphin, < click Here >.

What do you think, should people be allowed to feed wild dolphins?

Elusive Pink Dolphins

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

We have reported before about the elusive pink dolphin that live in South America. ABC news did a video piece on the Pick Dolphin in Bolivia.  They live in the Amazon River. You need to see this video.

What do you think about the pink dolphin? Should they build river dams to have electricity for people or save the pink dolphin? I look forward to your responses.

Spinner Dolphins

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Hi All,

When I came back from Oahu Hawaii and was blessed with snorkeling and swimming around with Spinner Dolphins off the western coast, it was an experience that I will never forget. Especially their unique behavior of jumping out of the water.  This is a sight you need to see. We have an youtube video of our experience.  SEE VIDEO

Also, today, we added a story about Spinner Dolphins. You can find out a lot information with this article. Check out the Spinner Dolphins Article.

I know you can see Spinner Dolphins in many tropical locations but Hawaii is a great place to see them. I did both, the dolphin swim in Oahu Hawaii, and the wild dolphin trip, both are great!!

I only visited Oahu and it was beautiful. Can someone out there add some input about Hawaii and the spinner dolphins?

John

Swimming with Dolphins Oahu Hawaii

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Hi there,

I was just thinking about my honeymoon in Oahu Hawaii and where we swam with the dolphins and did so much more.

First of all, Hawaii is really beautiful and the people are really nice.  There is so much to do there, mountains, oceans, shopping, and sightseeing.

The swim with the dolphins at sea life park hawaii is amazing. The park overlooks the North Shore of Oahu and you get the best of both worlds, swimming with dolphins and a view that is breath taking.

To see a video from our day, click here:

We also went to the Polynesian Village, Snorkeling with Wild Spinner Dolphins, ate amazing Dim Sum in China Town in Honolulu, shrimp farms and ate delicious shrimp,  my wife’s favorite, and went to the Pearl Harbor memorial too.

Does anyone out there have an Oahu Hawaii story? I know I have heard about the other islands but I like to hear more stories about Oahu.
God Bless,
John

Punta Cana Dolphin and Snorkeling

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Hi All,

Punta Cana is so beautiful, the water, beaches and people. This place is growing by leaps and bounds. It is wild to see how fast Punta Cana as a vacation destination has taken off. I guess because of the modern airport that is close by all the resorts and the reasonably priced all inclusive resorts help. But of coarse the activities are amazing here too, from the natural dolphin swim in Punta Cana, to snorkeling the reefs, horseback riding on the beach, fun boat rides in the ocean, and watersports galore. The word has spread and this has become a HOT destination.

We wrote a story about the Natural Dolphin Swim and the Snorkeling Experience in Punta Cana. If you like to read it, please  Click Here – Punta Cana Dolphin Swimming and Snorkeling.

Snorkeling or Free-Diving, which many call it, is a great water sport to get used to. It seems easy and it is once you get used to the mask and snorkel in your mouth. Once you get past that hurdle of not swallowing water all the time, you need to try holding your breath and free dive down under the water. The world record is about 300 feet under the water, pretty amazing. You will appreciate this record once you try free diving under the water only a few feet, not that easy. I have seen people free dive up to 60 feet. I still still struggle to 20 :) .

Here in Punta Cana you can snorkel in the Ocean and you can snorkel with the dolphins with the Natural Swim. So the better you are are with the equipment, the better time you will have. If you can, buy a mask and snorkel at your local dive shop and you can practice at your local pool, lake or ocean. You will be ready for this vacation!!

Do we have any snorkel stories out there? From beginners? From Novice? From the Experts? I would love to hear all your experiences.
God Bless,
John

Sarasota Dolphin Research Program

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Hi All,

Here is an interesting article I found on the web, how the Mote’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program study a wild dolphin since 1971. Unfortunately this dolphin called “FBS”, died May 22 of this year.

The article starts with…

A female wild dolphin monitored for 38 years by the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program based at Mote Marine Laboratory died May 22, leaving behind two documented generations of offspring to continue her legacy.  < Read More>

I found this article really interesting for the fact that they tracked this dolphin for 38 years and how  tough her life was out there in the open ocean in the later years of her life. But she did have a big family which was really nice.

There are some human similarities because FBS was so close to her dolphin pods during her early years and then alone at the end. Isn’t that how we treat our seniors too? Where many of our seniors are alone and without any family.

What do you think of this research? Was it worth the time and effort?
God Bless,
John

Dolphins seen trying to kill calf

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Hi All,

I read this online article about Tuxuxi Dolphins, from South America, have been spotted killing their young. I really have a hard time time to believe this report.

Here is the beginning of the BBC article.

It is the first record of these dolphins attempting infanticide. Although common in many mammal species, infanticide is rarely recorded among cetaceans, the group of animals that includes whales and dolphins. < Read More >

If you read the article, to me, it seemed this researcher, only spotted a isolated incident and there was no proof of the baby dolphin dying.  But what do you think? Do you think a dolphin pod could kill its young?
God Bless,
John
