Swimming with the Dolphins by Jules Mummert

Hi All,

Here is a fun story by Jules Mummert where she swam with the dolphins. It was her day in the Upper Keys, Florida about 6 months ago. She starts her story with, Imagine swimming next to an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in a sunlit lagoon. Arms at your sides and flippers covering your feet, you glide through the water. Touching the dolphin·s back, you take a deep breath through your snorkel and dive down, side-by-side, into an underwater paradise.

Does anyone else out there have a story out there they would like to share about swimming with the dolphins?

Pink dolphin population tumbles off Taiwan

Hi all,

Wow, here is another story that is showing how man is not being a good steward of this planet. This story is about the rare Pacific Humback dolphin and the number of these dolphins have declined off Taiwan over the past three years to an estimated 120, the Formosa Cetus Research and Conservation Group and the Wild at Heart Legal Defence Association found after three years of study and research.

Illegal fishing is netting dolphins for high-end restaurants in central Taiwan, the two groups suspect. They say untreated wastewater from a reservoir plus hundreds of coastal factories are killing off small estuary fish that draw dolphins to the Taiwan coast and easy prey for the fishermen.

Let’s hope and pray, now that we know about the problem that we can do something about it. Does anyone out there know more about these dolphins and would like to share about it?

Japanese Dolphin “With Legs” Is a Setback for Evolution Supporters

Hi all,

Here is an interesting new ariticle I saw on the internet where an AP news release where the headline reads, Japanese Researchers Find Dolphin With ‘Remains of Legs.’

The story itself declares that, “Japanese researchers said Sunday that a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of back legs, a discovery that may provide further evidence that ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land.”

A paragraph later we read, “Fossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos and deer. Scientists believe they later transitioned to an aquatic lifestyle and their hind limbs disappeared.”

Obviously, the conclusions one wants to make from this dolphin are more or less predetermined by what one believed before the dolphin was found.

So, what do you make of this story? What is your thoughts on Evolution vs. Intelligent Design?

Is it just me, or did that dolphin just put me in time out

Hi all,

Here is an interesting book review of The Octopus and the Orangutan by Eugene Linden. The book ask these questions, How smart are animals? Are they self aware? Can they psychologically adapt or is everyting pre-programmed? You will be exposed to many animal behaviors including the dolphin and will read Eugene Linden findings. Here is excerpt on a dolphin behavior.

One of the most interesting accounts in the book involves a dolphin researcher. When the dolphin did something wrong, the researcher would step back 15 feet from the tank for a few minutes, giving the dolphin a “time out.” Now this dolphin had a particular dietary stipulation; it did not like fish with the fins still on them. When the dolphin would receive a fish with the fins on, it would spit them out. After a while the researcher would cut the fins off, but once she forgot, and when the dolphin saw this fish (the equivalent to leaving the crust on a sandwhich when you prefer the crust cut off) the dolphin swam way to the other side of the tank and would not respond to the researcher for a few moments. The dolphin co-opted the behavior the researcher used to essentially punish her for doing something wrong, i.e. giving her fish with fins on. The researcher repeated her mistake and every time the dolphin would retreat to the other side, turning the tables of the time-out punishment idea.

Has anyone out there done any other studies on animal behaviors and would like to share it?
