Swimming with the Dolphins in Punta Cana – Dominican Republic

Hi All,I just got back from the Dominican Republic. My journey started in the North, Puerto Plata where we have a Dolphin Encounter program and then drove down to the South East, Punta Cana. The drive from the North was a challenge considering I speak very little Spanish and the streets signs are poor to say the least. I would highly recommend that you speak a little Spanish if you plan to drive around the Dominica Republic yourself.Punta Cana was a new adventure for me. It is a beautiful place. It kind of reminds me more of Florida because it is flatter there with long white sandy beaches. I was able to find the Dolphin Island facility and set up appointment to try their Dolphin Swim / Encounter program there in Bavaro, right next to Punta Cana. The facility is in the middle of the ocean, a large fenced in area where the dolphins can swim around. To get to the dolphins, you need to take a boat from a private hotel out there.

Once off the boat, you get into 2 groups of 11 people and enter the water. You have a chance to free swim with the dolphins for about 20 – 30 minutes water time. Only petting the dolphins, you do not get to be pushed or pulled by the dolphins in this program. It was still very fun. You do get to have some photos with the dolphins by the professional photography staff. Here is a picture of me:

The whole experience of the Dolphin Free Swim was really refreshing to see the dolphins in such a beautiful environment, beautiful clean ocean and plenty of room for them to swim around. Here is a picture of the dolphins having some fun.

Over all, Punta Cana is a great place to have a vacation. The area has a lot of watersports activities, snorkeling, parasailing, scubadiving, boating, and so much more. It is a great couples and family place. Also, a great value, I stayed in a nice all inclusive, food and beverages included, resort for $45 a night.

Has anyone out there been to Punta Cana and have opinion on the area? Anything else to report about the area?

Hopefully, I will have a more in dept stories on my travels and Dominican Republic soon!
Have a great day!
God Bless
John

    Hi Aaron,

I don’t know of any location that you can swim with the dolphins free, especially in Punta Cana. We do offer a contest on http://www.dolphinworld.org for a Free dolphin swim in Miami. You can enter, maybe you can win.

What resort did you stay at in Punta Cana? Olease email me, thanks.

    Shannon,
I can not remember. It was in Bravo which is where most of the resort are. Punta Cana is very nice but not much going on. Bravo is where there are very nice resorts and more of a Dominican feel to it.

hiya i recentley booked a holiday to punta cana and am looking to swim with dolphins as its been a life long dream and after been surfing the net i came across the puerto plata ocean world and was wanting your opinion on whether to pay for an internal flight to puerto plata or if its better in punta cana? both experiences are a chance in a life time for me but i just wanted a second opinion off someone 1st hand could you please e-mail me with your answer thankyou.

    Hi Geogina,
Both programs are great but the program in Punta Cana is really unique. Most Dolphin swim programs are with totally trained dolphins and Puerto Plata is similar to that. In Punta Cana you get to free swim with the dolphins in an enclosed fenced in a natural ocean environment. So in Punta Cana it is more natural, like you would be swimming with wild dolphins. You need to ask yourself, do you really need to touch the dolphins and enjoy a dorsal fin ride, then you should go to Puerto Plata. Otherwise, the Punta Cana Natural Dolphin swim should be perfect for you.
    God Bless,
    John

We did this last month and it was totally awesome, there’s nothing like swimming with the dolphins, it’s a once in a lifetime experience.
