Swimming with Wild Dolphins, not in Florida but Bahamas and Hawaii
Hi there,
We get a fair amount of request to swim with wild dolphins in Florida. Unfortunately, that won’t happen here in South Florida. We have a 1 Day Wild Dolphin in Key West program, but the Wild Dolphin portion is only observation and not getting into the water with the dolphins. You get to watch them for a long time, sometimes for 40 minutes (See the video below shot by a participant). A few years ago, all the sight seeing boat captains from Key West got together, lead by Captain Sheri, and an alliance was formed with rules and regulation for the dolphins. From that point on, no sightseeing boat allows any tourist to get into the water with the dolphins.
There is a good article by Elizabeth Chang from the Washington Post about her swimming with Wild Dolphins in Hawaii. I guess as a community, they have decided to allow tourist to enter the water with the Wild Dolphins there. To read her article go to: Wild Dolphin Swim Hawaii
Also, you can swim with Wild Spotted Dolphins in Bahamas, which I have done. The water and the Caribbean atmosphere is so perfect there. Our trip is aboard, Capt Geoffrey’s boat, where you spend 6 Days and 5 Nights and look for Wild Dolphins each day. Captain Geoff is the most experience Captain in Bimini. When you find them and have the opportunity to slip into the water with them, it is totally amazing to be eye to eye with these amazing creatures. To see our website about this excursion, go to Bimini Wild Dolphn Swim
What’s your opinion of the Wild Dolphin Swim program? Should it be more like Key West where you can only watch the dolphins? Or should it be more like Hawaii and Bahamas?
God Bless,
John
