Researcher tunes in to dolphin ’sine’ language

Hi All,

Not to brag, but I have swam with many dolphins, in captivity and in the wild. It is truly amazing to hear the sounds they make, especially the loud clicking ones. When you hear that clicking sound in the water, it is really hard to tell what direction the dolphins are coming from but they always find you. You have some idea what the sounds are trying to do but you can not be totally 100% sure what the sounds mean to the dolphins. Well I read this story online about these researchers who seem to have some conclusion on what the sounds mean. The story starts with…

By listening in on bottlenose dolphins under water, marine scientist Liz Hawkins found the creatures had specific whistles for certain activities.

When socialising the dolphins tended to make whistles that were flat or rising in tone, but during their travels “sine” whistles that rise and fall were more frequently heard. <Read More>

Dolphin Hearing

Has any of you heard dolphins and the sounds they make? What do you think about what these researchers are saying? Do you think the researchers are correct?
Well, Christmas time is here and don’t get all caught in all the materialism. We should not forget the real reason for the season, it is about celebrating the birth of Christ and spending time with family. So say “Merry Christmas” it feels really good when you say it.
God Bless and Have a great Christmas Day,
John

Dolphins Use Weeds to Get Girls

Hi All,

I read this interesting article about Dolphins and their courting behavior in the wild. They have experts that have watched wild dolphins and found that they bring weeds as a courting behavior. Some of the experts think this could be a sign of culture for the dolphins. This article defines culture as the ability to teach the next generation on how to behave. Wow, I really don’t believe the dolphins are teaching culture but the signs of natural behavior. You need to read the article and get your own opinion

Here is an excerpt from the article…..

Male dolphins in the mood for love need none of these things. It turns out that THE gift in your classier dolphin circles is the ever popular clump of weeds or twigs. Bring your fine lady dolphin friend a bunch of organic material in your mouth and you’ll be blowhole deep in dolphin action in no time. Just remember to surface every once in a while.

Researchers previously thought that dolphins attracted mates with that playful behaviour we find so cute. I’m glad I didn’t know this before today. I used to love Sea World, and the thought that those adorably scampering dolphins were engaging in foreplay probably would have affected me in a negative way.

The discovery of object presentation as a mating behaviour sheds new light on dolphins and allows researchers to describe dolphin groups in a new way. Some researchers are starting to use the word “culture”, although that description is proving controversial.

Do you think dolphins can have “Cultural” instincts? What is your opinion?
Have a great day!
