Navy’s Plan to Deploy Dolphins for Homeland Security

Hi All,

I find this really interesting, what the US Navy is doing with Bottlenose Dolphins and Sea Lions. Right now the navy wants to use these mammals to protect a Navy Submarine Fleet in Washington State. You need to read this article from LA Times:

The article reads:
The Navy wants to use dolphins and sea lions to protect a Puget Sound submarine fleet, as the mammals do in Georgia. But opponents say the waters off Washington state are too cold for the animals. < Read More>

Do you think the Navy should use the marine mammals to protect the submarine fleet?
I would love to hear your opinion.

No I don’t think that the US navy needs to use dolphins to protect their fleet. That’s what the subs are for. NOT dolphins! The thought of useing these beautifull creatures for war just …. ME! I don’t have words to describes my feeling. I love these creatures too much to see them used for warfare.

    JOHN,
I THINK I’VE SEEN THIS BEFORE. DID THEY SAY IF GEORGE C. SCOTT WAS WORKING WITH THEM?

    Hey Joe,
Very funny. It does bring a flash back to that movie, what was it called? Anyway, I have not heard the outcome on situation. If anyone has a update, I would love to hear it.

john- my sister was able to see how the dolphins worked with the navy and she said that they help out a lot. subs can’t do what the dolphins do because subs are large and cant move around sea mines. people might think its dangerous for the dolphins to find the mines but its actually not. dolphins are extreamly fast so if i mine were to actually go off because of a dolphin (which i dont think even has happened) they would be able to escape. just wanted to get that out there.
    thanks :)
