Photos from Anguilla and Tortola, Dolphins, Beaches, and Sailing

Hi all,

I thought you would enjoy the photographs I have from my trip to Anguilla and Tortola.

Day 1 was the day I got picked up from the Airport by my Uncle. After our greeting, we immediately went to the beach. Not sure what to expect, the beach was a WOW. I loved it and it was a perfect beginning to decompress from my flight over to this island paradise. Anguilla has been voted some of the best beaches in the world and I can see why!!

Day 2 was the day my Aunt and Uncle, their friends, and I went to swim with the dolphins in Anguilla. We had a blast and I was surprised how much my Uncle loved it. He had a smile on his face I will never forget.

Day 3, we went and meet some American friend’s of my Aunt and Uncle who own a home on the island. We had lunch at a nice beachside restaurant and went to visit thier home also. All I can say, I could live in Anguilla.

Day 4, I traveled to Tortola for the day to have a look at the dolphin facility there. Tortola was lovely, nice size mountains and beaches. Cruise ships come into port here. You will see that the background to this facility was lush and green where Anguilla is on a hillside over looking the ocean.

Day 5, we went sailing with Chocolat Sailing excursion out of Sandy Ground, Anguilla. Captain Roland showed us a great time, snorkeling, beaches, lunch, and of coarse sailing. A great finish to a fun trip.

Also, I need to send out my love to my Aunt and Uncle who were so kind to open their room to me and it was great to spend time with them (hopefully I did not snore at all :) ). It has been years since I have done that with them. In our busy lives, we kind of forgot of our families and hopefully this experience will rekindle others to spend some QT with theirs.

Here are the photos:

Have a great day!

Dolphin Boat/Sub Can Jump Out of Water and Dive

Hi all,

Did you all see this article on the internet? This is a toy I would have loved to have under my Christmas Tree. This is one wild and expensive water toy. This boat can hold two people and is able to dive up to two feet under water for up to 20 seconds at a time. When the craft surfaces it can jump up to 10 feet in the air and perform tricks.

Check out this story, Dolphin Boat/Sub Can Jump Out of Water and Dive

Any comments or thoughts on this boat?

Is it just me, or did that dolphin just put me in time out

Hi all,

Here is an interesting book review of The Octopus and the Orangutan by Eugene Linden. The book ask these questions, How smart are animals? Are they self aware? Can they psychologically adapt or is everyting pre-programmed? You will be exposed to many animal behaviors including the dolphin and will read Eugene Linden findings. Here is excerpt on a dolphin behavior.

One of the most interesting accounts in the book involves a dolphin researcher. When the dolphin did something wrong, the researcher would step back 15 feet from the tank for a few minutes, giving the dolphin a “time out.” Now this dolphin had a particular dietary stipulation; it did not like fish with the fins still on them. When the dolphin would receive a fish with the fins on, it would spit them out. After a while the researcher would cut the fins off, but once she forgot, and when the dolphin saw this fish (the equivalent to leaving the crust on a sandwhich when you prefer the crust cut off) the dolphin swam way to the other side of the tank and would not respond to the researcher for a few moments. The dolphin co-opted the behavior the researcher used to essentially punish her for doing something wrong, i.e. giving her fish with fins on. The researcher repeated her mistake and every time the dolphin would retreat to the other side, turning the tables of the time-out punishment idea.

Has anyone out there done any other studies on animal behaviors and would like to share it?

Stranded dolphin to return to sea after recovery

Hi there,

After hearing all the negative reports about China and its environmental concerns, it is nice to read a story like this. This story is about a bottlenose dolphin that was stranded along the coast of south China and has been doing well following two weeks of treatment. The dolphin is expected to return to the sea in about a month after it fully recovers, experts said on Wednesday.

To read more, go to:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-10/04/content_5169081.htm

Do you think this is a good PR piece from China or do you think the Chinese have a concern for the welfare of marine animals and other sea life?

Help Winter the Dolphin and her friends in need of rescue

Hi Gang,

I have had some inquiries where to make a donation for Winter’s new tail. On the CMA website there is a donation page, http://www.cma-donate.theideastore.us/give_to_help.php

If you do not know about Winter, go to:
http://www.cmaquarium.org/Winter%20-%20baby%20bottlenose%20dolphin.htm
and read her story there and look at the amazing pictures of her.

Is there anyone out there that can think of a good fundraiser for Winter?

Tropical Storm Ernesto

Hi All,

Sitting through the final night of the storm in South Florida. Wow, this storm was a nothing storm, hardly any rain or wind. Thank goodness! I know preparing for a storm and it doesn’t come is really a pain but I need to look on the bright side, no damage to people, property, and the dolphins.

Everything should be back up to normal either Wednesday or Thursday the latest.

Thank you for all your prayers for safety.
